Sep 08, 2006· All vertical milling machines (Bpt or Mill/Drill) are much more rigid in a plunge cut than they are in a lateral cut. My guess is than a deep cut, say three or four cutter diameters, can be plunged in about half the time it takes to side mill. Lateral cutting does leave a nice, uniform finish to the vertical wall of the cut, if that is important.
